What We’ve Been Up To
From weekly caving trips, and monthly member’s weekends to major expeditions, training sessions and conservation work, there’s always something happening at the MCG. Here are some recent highlights.

Otter Hole Trip
7th June 2025
“A member’s weekend trip to this Forest of Dean classic. A fantastic, if a little muddy, adventure.” Read more in the next MCG News.

Wookey Hole: Beyond the Show Cave
6th July 2025
“…….it took about a hour to get to are final chamber with some sliding,climbing and crawling on the way, was a good trip enjoyed it.”

SRT Practice Session
8th June 2025
“A little SRT practice in Coral cave. It’s a good little practice cave for anyone getting into SRT. It’s just one main pitch with a little traverse in the middle.”

Digging at Stainsby’s Shaft
2nd August 2025
“The team focused on the ongoing dig in possible passage… ██████████████████████… and something interesting has been found.”

A Journey Through Ogof Draenan
22nd February 2025
“The entrance series consisted of a mixture of tight crawls and low passages, which eventually opened into Midnight Chamber, a large, dark void that provided a good resting point…██████████████████████…. We pressed on towards Circus Maximus, a vast chamber with impressive formations and an eerie stillness. Beyond lay the Unnamed Chamber, a lesser-known yet equally striking space, where we paused to take in the atmosphere.”

Exploring Shatter Cave
21st April 2025
“Shatter really is a beautiful cave. After visiting Shatter a quick look next door in W/L finished off our caving activities for the day.”
Highlights from 2024
2024 was a busy and memorable year for the club, marked by special events, exciting trips, and our regular caving weekends.

70th Anniversary Dinner
Celebrating seven decades of the Mendip Caving Group with a special dinner for members past and present at Wookey Hole.

Away Trip: Portland
Exploring the unique Portland Caves with gorgeous views on the Isle of Portland.

Away Trip: South Wales
Tackling the classic systems of the Swansea and Neath Valleys, including Ogof Ffynnon Ddu.

Away Trip: Yorkshire
Enjoying the best of the Dales with trips down classic pots like Gaping Gill and Bull Pot of the Witches.

12 Members’ Weekends
A full year of monthly members’ weekends at the cottage, filled with caving, digging trips, and socialising.

Tuesday Evening Trips
Mid-week trips throughout the year to local Mendip caves, to both well visited and the lesser known sites.
